Taking advantage of an elevated site in the historic heart of Fremantle, these three new homes capture panoramic views across the port city to the Indian Ocean and Rottnest Island.

Each terrace-style house enjoys a 10m wide frontage and is arranged over four levels with lift access. The homes feature cantilevered balconies and are crowned by roof terraces with barbecue facilities, to make the most of the stunning views.

Internally, each one has four bedrooms and two bathrooms, with generous living and entertaining spaces, and ground-floor carparking.

The design draws plenty of natural light into each home, thanks to lightwells, glass block walls, double-height voids, sunken gardens and rear outdoor areas.

They also capture prevailing breezes for natural cooling and fresh air, and a mechanically-operated glass lid above the horseshoe-shaped stair in each home ventilates out warm air, during summer.

Other sustainability measures include external sun protection via solid angled blades; rainwater tanks; recycled water for garden irrigation; the use of local plants for reduced water consumption; and durable materials for longevity and low-maintenance over time.

This project demonstrates how generously sized houses can be built on narrow sites, without sacrificing openness, access to light, and connection with the natural and urban environment.
